Program Description

Set off on a unique trekking experience through the volcanic heart of Terceira Island and discover the remarkable landscapes of the Central Plateau. This tour is perfect for nature lovers who want to explore some of the Azores’ most distinctive geological formations.

The tour begins with a transfer from your hotel to Algar do Carvão, where the approximately 6.2 km trail starts. The route runs through the protected Central Plateau, connecting two natural highlights - Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre.

During the hike, you will walk through native Laurissilva forest, pass an old geothermal borehole and enjoy views of volcanic peaks such as Pico da Salsa and Pico Tamujo, as well as the unique Sanguinhal peatland.

Along the way, you will also see the Pico Alto geothermal power station and reach a viewpoint overlooking the Guilherme Moniz caldera, Pico do Alpanaque and, in good weather conditions, the Serra de Santa Bárbara range and the islands of São Jorge and Pico.

The trail then descends around Pico do Sanguinhal, returning to the Algar do Carvão parking area. The route has been carefully developed using local wood obtained during the removal of invasive eucalyptus trees, supporting ecological restoration.

After the trek, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

The route is approximately 6.2 km long and suitable for participants with a moderate level of fitness.

The order of visits and the programme may be subject to change.
