Program Description
There are places in the Azores where the greenery seems to stretch endlessly. Hills covered in lush vegetation slope down towards the Atlantic, waterfalls cascade through forested landscapes, and small villages blend seamlessly into their surroundings. This is the side of the island you'll discover on your excursion to Nordeste, taking you through the picturesque eastern part of São Miguel. Ocean panoramas, traces of age-old traditions and the remarkable natural heritage of the Azores await you.
You'll depart from Ponta Delgada towards the island's northern coast. Your first stop will be the Santa Iria viewpoint, offering sweeping views of green cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. You'll then continue to Ribeira dos Caldeirões, where a picturesque waterfall and one of the island's surviving watermills lie surrounded by lush vegetation. It's a place where nature meets the history of everyday life on São Miguel.
The journey continues along the coast to Nordeste, a charming village nestled among green hills. Here, you'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant before heading to Cinzeiro Forest Park, where you'll discover the rich natural heritage of the Azores.
One of the most fascinating parts of the excursion will be a visit to the Azorean Bullfinch Environmental Interpretation Centre. Here, you'll learn about the priolo, a rare bird species found exclusively in the eastern part of São Miguel. You'll also discover the importance of the Azorean laurel forests, which provide its natural habitat, and the conservation efforts helping to protect this endangered species.
Your return journey will reveal another side of the island. From the Ponta da Madrugada viewpoint, you'll admire the eastern coastline and the vast expanse of the Atlantic. Next, you'll visit Povoação, a small town nestled among the hills. Your final stop will be Furnas Lake, located within a volcanic crater. A peaceful break surrounded by green slopes will provide a relaxing end to your sightseeing before you make your way back to Ponta Delgada.
The excursion to Nordeste showcases the remarkable diversity of São Miguel. The sound of cascading waterfalls, sweeping ocean views, forests that provide refuge for rare species and peaceful villages come together on a route that reveals the distinctive character of the Azores.
