Program Description

A full-day trip from Sal to Fogo offers the chance to experience one of the most distinctive islands in Cape Verde, whose landscape and history are closely shaped by volcanic activity. The programme includes a flight to Fogo, sightseeing across the island and a return to Sal on the same day.

The visit begins in São Filipe, a town known for its historic buildings and local architecture. From there, the route continues inland through Forno and Patim to Achada Furna, a village created for families displaced by the 1995 eruption. It is one of the places that reflects how local communities have adapted to living in the shadow of an active volcano.

In the Cabeça Fundão area, ancient craters and extensive lava fields shape the scenery. A stop is planned at the entrance to Fogo Natural Park, offering time for photos and views across the volcanic landscape. From here, Pico do Fogo, the active volcano and highest peak in Cape Verde, is clearly visible, together with the crater formed during the 2014 eruption.

A visit to Portela, a village rebuilt after the 2014 eruption, offers further insight into how volcanic events have influenced local life. Another important part of the programme is Chã das Caldeiras, where the stark landscape meets local culinary traditions. Lunch at a local restaurant is followed by a visit to a winery in a region known for wines made from grapes grown at high altitude on volcanic soils.

After a full day of sightseeing, the group returns to São Filipe for the flight back to Sal.
